Dream Blossoms : Dreams Blossom

Flowers. Blossoming beauty. They cheer us when we’re blue. They celebrate our most joyful moments in life. They comfort us in hours of pain… On December 8, 2016, a disc in my lower spine ruptured—one of several caused by hereditary spinal diseases and sport injuries. Only this one was different… It left me bedridden for 5 years. It wasn’t until January 2018 that I was strong enough to even pick up my camera for the first time! I was elated at the discovery but the fact remained, I still could not physically go anywhere to take photographs, and I couldn’t hold my camera for more than a few seconds.

One evening on his way home from teaching, my husband Ken bought me a gorgeous bouquet of richly coral-colored roses… I yearned to photograph them, so he found my dusty tripod, mounted my camera so as not to stress my fragile back. Well, I’ve been taking photos of flowers since I was 16… but never with the passion, intensity, and inspiration of continual discovery that I found exploring a world of blossoms that day!

Joy returned to my soul. I felt like, after so much suffering, I was beginning to see a wee bit of my artist self return. And my dreams began to blossom via exploration of these dreamy blossoms (hence the name, Dream Blossoms : Dreams Blossom).

That’s how this series was born… in baby steps, just like the healing process itself. Experimenting with images of blossoms, I leaned into the peace, hope, and beauty of their vibrant colors and sensuous curves and the miracle of their unfurling. I eagerly hope that these contemplative, atmospheric images help every heart find peace, healing, and joy.

Claude Monet said, “the best use of mystery is to evoke an object little by little in order to reveal a state of mind.” These painterly, impressionistic images do just that. Every ethereal image is created in the camera, in natural sunlight pouring through our bedroom windows, in the colors of that fleeting moment-–no digital enhancement. It is truly painting with light, in the most impressionistic fashion.

I am passionate about capturing imaginative images of shimmering beauty. Through my art, I hope to share a moment of joy, a reminder of a lovely memory, or simply tranquil respite from the stress of everyday life. My images have been described as poetic, romantic, dreamy, mysterious, meditative, reflective, often wabi sabi (the beauty found in the imperfect, impermanent, transitory nature of life). Always evocative and intriguing, I hope these little treasures will bring tranquility and a touch of elegance to your life.
